How do I play?
Your army stands in files, front to back. Pick up the unit at the back of a file and set it down at the back of another. Three of a colour in a file become a strike, which counts down its turns and then goes up the file at the enemy. Three of a colour in a rank become a wall. The first five stops of the story teach all of it with a pointing hand, and the question-mark button in any battle opens the how-to-play cards.
What else can I do with an action?
You have three actions a turn. Besides carrying a unit you can dismiss one, by holding it, to close a gap. If that completes a strike or a wall, the action is free. You can also call up the units waiting behind your line.
My strike did less than the number on it.
A strike grows while it waits and is at full strength on the turn it goes. On its way up the file it spends itself on whatever it meets: walls first, then charging formations, then idle units, which fall to it. What is left comes off the enemy commander's health. Strike where they are thin.
What do the shapes on the units mean?
Each of the three army colours has a shape of its own: a disc, a diamond and a shield. A match is by colour, and the shape is there so that colour is never the only way to tell.
How do guards and giants work?
A guard is one file wide and needs two line units of its colour behind it. A giant is two files wide and needs two behind it in each file. Then they charge like any strike, hit much harder, and each has an ability of its own. Tap any piece in a battle to read what it does.
What are volleys and massed strikes?
Strikes of one colour that go on the same turn are a volley, and each hits harder for it. A second strike formed directly behind one that is already charging joins it, and the two go as one massed strike.
How do I use my commander's power?
The meter round your commander's portrait fills as blows land on either side. When it is full, tap the portrait.
What is the kit?
In the story you find guards, giants and relics as you go. KIT on the map chooses which you bring: up to two kinds of guard or giant, and one relic.
How do I turn off sound, music, vibration or flashing?
Tap the gear on the title screen. Each has its own switch.
Where is my progress saved?
On your device only, so deleting the app erases it. The game has no account and keeps nothing online. To start the story over, tap the gear, then RESTART CAMPAIGN. The privacy policy has the details.
Does it need the internet?
The story and battles against the computer do not. Playing online does, and so does buying the full game or restoring it.
How does online play work?
ONLINE on the title screen. QUICK MATCH meets whoever is waiting. HOST A ROOM gives you a four-letter code for a friend, who enters it under JOIN A ROOM. Online is units only: no commanders' powers and no relics, so both sides start level. You go by a callsign the game makes up, and there is no account. Leaving a match, or losing your connection, gives it to your rival.
What is free, and what does the full game add?
Free: the opening story, the five lessons and the whole of act one, and battles led by Sana of the Stormriders or Brannoc of the Forgeborn. The full game is a single purchase. It adds acts two, three and four of the story, six more commanders, and the Tidebound and Duskcourt armies. There is no subscription and there are no ads.
I bought the full game. How do I get it back on a new phone?
Tap the gear on the title screen, then THE FULL GAME, then Restore Purchase. Use the same Apple Account or Google account you bought it with.
I bought the full game on iPhone. Do I have it on Android too?
No. The purchase is made through the App Store or Google Play and stays with that store's account, so it does not cross from one kind of phone to the other. The game has no account of its own to carry it.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone running iOS 15 or later, and Android phones running Android 10 or later. The game plays upright, in one hand.
On an iPhone Duo it also plays opened flat. Two people can play at one phone there, face to face or side by side.
